Project Information
Award winning digital sculptor Rayven Sheilagh D’Clark was chosen from hundreds of artists to create a commissioned work by the ‘Equal Justice Initiative’ for the Black Renaissance Project.
The foundry produced 52 unique moulds and silicon bronze huge, yet intricate, castings to create the installation.
The work (consisting of three bronze permanent public art sculptures at the Freedom Monument Sculpture Park in Montgomery, Alabama) marks the largest commission ever obtained for a woman under 30.
Technical details
- With traditional patterns and sand castings deemed unviable to achieve the required finish and lost wax castings being dismissed due to the risk of distortion, printed sand moulds were employed.
- 3D scans of real people used by the artist to create the design concepts.
- Complex dimpled finish and numerous undercuts below the eyes, ears and noses.
- Significant design work required to divide the work into 52 unique parts, and then used to create printed sand moulds from Voxeljet.
- In-house design of the running systems incorporating filters, a double-pour running system design and carefully located vents to ensure quiescent filling and minimum turbulence.
