A realisation of Argentinian artist Tomás Saraceno’s vision for Cloud Cities Barcelona – a spider’s web of complex panels, cables and connections has been enabled thanks to castings supplied by investment foundry Dean Group International.

The company needed to produce a range of cast nodes in different sizes for the art installation which now appears to float effortlessly, like a cloud, at the top of Mirador Torre Glòries, providing its 200 daily visitors with 360° city-scape views.

Against a tight timescale, thousands of these safety critical nodes were supplied in stainless steel to 12 design variations. All required full machining and tapping of over 10,000 unique holes, to tight tolerances. The company used 3D printed waxes and full simulation, and the parts were all successfully delivered on time.

The certificate was presented at the Cast Metals Federation Best of British Castings Awards Dinner which attracted nearly 200 guests and was co-presented by CEO Dr Pam Murrell and comedian Geoff Norcott.

Pam Murrell said, “The awards evening has clearly showcased the successes of the sector and its evolving impact on UK manufacturing, and on the great castings being manufactured in metal by our UK foundries.”
