22 Nov CMF Members to benefit from innovations in ceramics as CAT International joins the Federation

CAT International Ltd has been manufacturing technical ceramics in Staffordshire for over 20 years, initially using pioneering technology for adding carbon to ceramic, but more lately employing InnovateUK grant funding to develop and patent Additive Manufacturing technology (3D printing), specifically to make ceramic parts for use in the cast metals industry.

The Hixon facility has two buildings with one housing production of the CERACAT foam filter utilising technology developed in-house for combining carbon and ceramic.  The CERACAT filter gives zirconia performance for steel and heavy iron applications but with a much lower energy input, significantly reducing manufacturing costs, enabling CAT to competitively export worldwide.

The second building provides warehousing for CERACAT and also a large range of holloware imported from SEEIF Ceramic in the Czech Republic for distribution to UK foundries.

At the heart of the business are the two owners, Dr Kassim Juma and Mike Leaney.  Kassim has spent 50 years in ceramic R&D and Mike 35 years in foundry and foundry supply.

“We are delighted to be joining the Federation at this time,” says company Director Mike Leaney.  “We have some exciting new projects under development, especially with the AM materials.  We potentially have solutions to ceramic application issues in CMF member facilities and are looking forward to reaching out to the wider UK cast metals industry to show what we have developed and listen to the further needs of the sector.  Customers that work with us know that we are always keen to employ our time and resources and enjoy getting involved in projects both large and small.”

Pam Murrell FICME, Cast Metals Federation CEO, agrees, “The industry is always innovating and developing to improve productivity, competitiveness and sustainability and suppliers play a vital role here – we are delighted to have suppliers involved in the Federation as they can offer really good insights, not to mention new products, to our members.  CAT International’s work on additive manufacturing can offer some clear benefits for the right application.  We look forward to working with Mike and his team at CAT International and hearing more about their new technology.”
