Changes to the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme (CJRS) advised by the HMRC, and what this means for you.

From 1‌‌ September HMRC will now pay 70% of usual wages up to a cap of £2,187.50 per month for the hours furloughed employees do not work.

What you need to do now:

  • Continue to pay your furloughed employees at least 80% of their usual wages for the hours they do not work, up to a cap of £2,500 per month. You will need to fund the difference between this and the CJRS grant yourself.
  • The caps are proportional to the hours not worked. For example, if your employee is furloughed for half their usual hours in September, you are entitled to claim 70% of their usual wages for the hours they do not work up to £1,093.75 (50% of the £2,187.50 cap).
  • Continue to pay furloughed employees’ National Insurance and pension contributions from your own funds.

Make sure your data is right
It’s important that you provide all the data we need to process your claim. Payment of your grant may be at risk or delayed if you submit a claim that is incomplete or incorrect, so we want to help you get this right. We will get in touch if we see any employee data missing from your previous claims.

Claiming for 100 or more employees: use the template
It’s really important to use the right file type when uploading your data. The easiest way to ensure your file is in the right format is to use the HMRC template. To find it search ‘download a template if you’re claiming for 100 or more employees through the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme’ on GOV‌.UK.

If your file is in the wrong format – for example, an incorrect file type or too many or too few columns – it may be rejected. If your file is rejected, you’ll receive a message to say it has not been accepted and your claim will not be processed.

Apprentice support: It’s time to apply for incentive payments

Employers can apply for incentive payments for hiring a new apprentice. Lots of organisations have already expressed an interest in this support.

You can get the payment in 3 steps

  1. Hire new apprentices between 1 August 2020 and 31 January 2021.
  2. Apply for the payment after you have added new apprentices to their apprenticeship service account.
  3. You will be eligible for 2 equal instalments after the apprentice completes 90 and 365 days of their apprenticeship.

£2,000 for each new apprentice

For apprentices aged:
•    16 to 24, receive £2,000 in total;
•    25 and over, receive £1,500 in total;

You can spend the payment on anything to support your organisation’s costs, from facilities and travel to uniforms and salaries. This is in addition to the £1,000 payment already given to help employers meet the needs of some groups of apprentices in the workplace.

New payment for people self-isolating in highest risk areas.

People on low incomes who need to self-isolate and are unable to work from home in areas with high incidence of COVID-19 will benefit from a new payment scheme. To be eligible for the funding, individuals must meet the following criteria:

  • Have tested positive for Covid-19 or received a notification from NHS Test and Trace asking them to self-isolate;
  • Have agreed to comply with the notification from NHS Test and Trace and provided contact details to the local authority;
  • Be employed or self-employed. Employed people will be asked to show proof of employment. Self-employed will be required to show evidence of trading income and that their business delivers services which the local authority reasonably judges they are unable to carry out without social contact;
  • Be unable to work from home (checks will be undertaken on all applicants) and will lose income a result
  • Be currently receiving Universal Credit or Working Tax Credit.

Safer transport campaign – car sharing: A number of shareable assets are available to help you support your staff to plan their journey to and from work. This includes information on car sharing. People should try not to share a vehicle with those outside their household or support bubble. Where people do need to car share they should try to: keep the windows open; share the car with the same people each time; and wear a face-covering.

Travel Corridors – England: Austria, Croatia and Trinidad and Tobago have been removed from the travel corridor list. If you arrive in England from these destinations you will need to self-isolate. Portugal has been added to the travel corridor list. If you arrive in England from Portugal after 4am on 22 August you may not need to self-isolate.

Safer transport guidance for operators has been updated with information on areas with local restrictions.

Reporting outbreaks of coronavirus – Action Cards: The Joint Biosecurity Centre has developed Action Cards, which reflect the latest advice on how to identify, manage and report a COVID-19 outbreak. The cards are designed as a useful visual checklist for businesses and bring together guidance and useful contacts to support your organisation’s planning. This will help businesses and other organisations work effectively with their local public health teams.
