INVESTMENT CASTING: A GUIDE TO ALLOY SELECTION.

This volume is intended as a comprehensive guide to  investment cast alloys covered by British Standards Specification 3146 Part I (1974) and Part II (1975) with the addition of certain other specialist alloys.

Section I is concerned with the cross-referencing of the alloys in BS 1346 Part I and Part II to comparable materials in other British and Overseas specifications.  It should be noted that references quoted are usually on the basis of chemical composition.

It is essential, therefore, that the individual user should consider all relevant aspects of a specification which is called up, by reference to the latest version of the actual specification quoted.  It is also pointed out that an investment cast equivalent can generally be supplied by the founder, even though a BS 3146 material may not be quoted.

In Section I, the cast materials in the overseas specifications covered are listed first, with more complete lists of these specifications as appendices.  The exceptions to this format is BS 970, for wrought products and to which a number of castings are still requested.  An explanation of the nomenclature adopted by each of the standard bodies concerned is also given in the appropriate appendix or elsewhere, as relevant.

Section II of the volume is specific to the alloys covered in BS 3146 Parts I and II, with some additions and details of the chemical composition and mechanical properties for each of the alloys, together with comprehensive notes on heat treatment, physical properties, foundry characteristics, weld ability etc.
